Beneath a twilight sky, the hum of the city whispered around them, making the rooftop feel like a secret haven. As Shinji leaned against the cool metal railing, staring out at the flickering city lights, he felt a tempest of emotions whirling within him. The weight of piloting the massive Eva, the perpetual sense of isolation, and the sorrow of past losses all gathered like storm clouds in his heart.

Asuka stepped onto the rooftop with her usual fiery energy, the gentle evening breeze teasing her crimson hair. She noticed Shinji’s distant gaze, the way his shoulders seemed to sag beneath the burden he carried. “Hey, you’re looking all morose again. What’s up?” she asked, trying to keep her tone light while masking her concern.

Shinji hesitated, the words caught in his throat. Vulnerability had never been his strong suit. But here, beneath the open sky, a flicker of courage ignited within him. “I don’t know… it’s just… sometimes I feel so alone. Like, no matter how hard I fight, I’m still just… me. And that’s the problem. I don’t like who I am most of the time.”

Her expression softened, and Asuka stepped closer, the night air casting a warm glow around them. “You’re not alone, Shinji. I get it—fighting those monsters? It’s supposed to make you strong, but strength isn’t just about brute power or not feeling at all. It can also be about facing our fear. We all have things we hide, ways we worry about who we are. Being vulnerable can feel scary, but it also shows real strength.”

He glanced sideways at her, surprised by the sincerity in her voice. “How can you say that? You’ve always seemed so… self-assured, like nothing shakes you. You don’t have to fight the same battles I do.”

Asuka laughed lightly, shaking her head. “You think I haven’t faced my own demons? Just because I put on a tough front doesn’t mean I don’t feel things—pain, sadness, insecurity… sometimes, it feels overwhelming. But it’s okay to feel like that. It doesn’t make you weak. Sharing it? That’s what takes real courage. That’s the brave part—the part where we have the chance to connect with others, to seek comfort in their presence, instead of shutting ourselves away.”

Silence settled between them, and Shinji absorbed her words like gentle raindrops quenching parched earth. When he finally spoke, his voice trembled. “You mean… it’s okay to be scared? It’s okay not to know what to do?”

“Exactly!” Asuka said, her eyes shining with understanding. “We’re all just trying to navigate this chaos. You’re not expected to have the answers all the time, Shinji. It’s perfectly normal to feel overwhelmed and ask for help. Can you imagine how different things would be if more people embraced that?

As the conversation deepened, the layers of their guarded hearts began to unravel. With each shared vulnerability, the emotional burden Shinji carried started to feel a little lighter. Together, they found a shared understanding that illuminated the darkness of their struggles.

“It’s been hard for me, especially after losing someone dear, fighting with my feelings, feeling such despair… I thought I had to navigate it alone, but now, I see the power of simply being connected to someone else, like how you are here right now,” Shinji admitted. “I’ve pushed so many people away and kept complicated feelings buried like they’d shatter me if I let them loose.
